LINUX OPTIONS

The Linux operating system is available in several different flavors, or distributions. Each is designed for the needs of different users.

Fedora
Fedora is a rock-solid Linux distribution sponsored by Red Hat Inc. It touts millions of installations worldwide and prides itself in being the most feature-forward distribution available. In fact, Fedora is well known for introducing a number of innovations for both servers and desktops. At the same time, the project's releases continue to be extremely stable and reliable.

* Additional fees may apply.

** Easy migration from old host via cPanel to cPanel, or from VPS/Dedicated or Dedicated/VPS with cPanel

Q: What's the difference between Linux and Windows?

A: Linux is open-source software, meaning it is developed by a community of programmers around the world who distribute their work freely to the project. Windows, on the other hand, is proprietary. It is developed by Microsoft employees, and it charges licensing fees to use its software. Of course, a key driver of your decision is what programs you want to use. If you need to use a program that only runs on Linux, you should use Linux. Likewise, a Windows program would only run on your Windows VPS.

Q: What are the advantages of 64-bit Linux?
A: Although not technically faster, 64-bit hardware and software show marked improvements for certain applications. To take full advantage of this, both the hardware and software must support the architecture. The main advantage is how much memory can be addressed. A 64-bit system can address 128GB, compared with 4GB on a 32-bit system.

Q: Is full root/administrator access included?
A: Yes, full root/administrator access is included with all GalaxyVision VPS/Dedicated plans.

Q: What does it mean that GalaxyVisions will manage my VPS? What's included?
A:
GalaxyVisions will take care of basic maintenance of your virtual private server. All plans include the following services without charge:

- Live 24 x 7 phone support
- Network setup and troubleshooting
- Server deployment
- Operating system Installation and testing

- Control panel troubleshooting

GalaxyVisions ' support engineers also provide many other services without charge, though these are usually fast fixes. Additional services are available and are charged by either the task or by the hour. See GalaxyVisions' chart of managed services for more information.

Q: How many sites or applications can each VPS handle? How can I figure out the best VPS plan for my needs?
A:  There is no set rule on the number of sites or applications that can be handled by a virtual private server as each site or application is different. Some are database driven while others are set up to stream content and others are very basic. Clients should discuss their requirements with the GalaxyVisions sales team. In addition, once the server is deployed, the load on the server can be monitored. Load tests can help indicate whether the VPS plan should be upgraded.

Q: How much bandwidth is included?
A: All VPS and Dedicated plans feature unmetered bandwidth. You will have full access to a 10Mbps connection and can use it 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Q: Is there firewall or protection?
A:
Software firewalls are available at no charge for all VPS and Dedicated server plans. Customers may use either the software firewall with the control panel or a firewall that is included in the operating system of the server.

Q: Will you migrate my data if it is somewhere else?
A:
As long as you have a Plesk or cPanel control panel at your old host, GalaxyVisions will migrate data at no additional charge. The same is true if you are currently a VPS customer and want to switch to dedicated - or vice versa. We offer this service at no charge because control panels have a migration tool that simplifies the process. If you do not have a control panel, we can still migrate your data, usually for a fee.

Q: How do I choose between VPS and dedicated hosting?
A:
If you need absolute power, flexibility and performance, and you've got the budget to support it, choose one of GalaxyVisions' dedicated hosting plans. That means you will have your own physical server with which you can do what you want. VPS strikes a balance between budget and performance. You will work on your VPS server just as you would a dedicated box, but it's virtualized, not a physical server.

Q: How do I manage my Linux VPS?
A:
You'll have access to three control panels for managing your server: Virtuozzo Power Panel (VZPP), WebHost Manager (WHM), and cPanel. See the Technology tab for more information regarding these control panels. In addition, you will have administrator/root access via RDP/SSH to install any applications.

Q: What are the most popular uses of Linux?
A:
Linux has a variety of uses, including desktop PCs, but it remains most popular as the OS of Web servers. Linux offers fine-grained control and ultimate flexibility to Web site administrators. Such control does come at a price: The interfaces tend to be more difficult to learn than those offered by Microsoft Windows.
